The 1980s. A time of turmoil. A dark time in the world politically. A turbulent personal decade. Charcoal drawing worked for me as a way of exploring the beauty as well as the difficulty of the time. The drawings were intuitive. Grew from the specific experience of walking at night in the Cornish landscape with Paul Spooner. That opened up a whole new lot of work. Some quite directly descriptive. Much with layers of narrative suggested. Images accumulated, erased, worked over. Ending in some drawings feeling like they had a presence. They worked.
